Save up to 40% on your electricity bill and up to 90% on your water-heating bill by installing a solar geyser.

System options:

Models: 58/1800/18 PS, 58/1800/26 PS, 58/1800/30 PS

Direct pumped storage frost resistant system. The Solar Collectors are used in the conversion of electrical geysers to solar, and are installed in a “split” system with the Solar Collector placed on the roof, and the hot-water storage tank, or geyser, located out of sight in the ceiling.

Models: 58/1800/18/150 P, 58/1800/30/250 P

Direct thermosiphon frost resistant system. The Integrated Pressurized System is a fully integrated “all in one” unit combining both the Solar Collector panel and the hot-water storage tank into one system, which is located on the roof. It is a pressurized system suited to mains water supply.

Models: 58/1800/12/100 UP, 58/1800/18/150 UP, 58/1800/24/200 UP, 58/1800/30/250UP

Direct thermosiphon frost resistant system. The Integrated Unpressurized System is a fully integrated “all in one” unit combining both the Solar Collector panel and the hot-water storage tank into one system located on the roof. It is an unpressurized system suited to use in gravity feed situations, usually where mains water supply is not available.

Why Solar Powered Geysers?

South Africa is the ideal country in which to install or to convert to a solar powered system, and in particular to solar powered geysers and solar water heating systems. The main reason for this is the abundant supply of solar radiation we receive; the solar radiation of South Africa ranges from around 1450 kWh/m2 to about 1950 kWh/m2 per year, compared to Europe which on average is 910kWh/m2 per year.

Internationally there is a massive drive towards cleaner energy provision as well as a greater awareness of climate change and the issues around global warming; and importantly for the home owner, the increasing need for a reliable power source.

Solar geysers FAQ

What are the benefits of installing or converting to a solar powered geyser?

  • Up to 80% of your water heating needs will be sourced from the sun
  • When you install a solar powered geyser you will be entitled to apply for an Eskom rebate. To read more about the Eskom rebates, please click here.
  • Solar powered geysers are up to 60% more efficient in frost-prone areas
  • Having hot water when others don’t (blackouts)
  • You will see an immediate reduction in your monthly electricity account of between 30 and 50 percent
  • Your solar powered geyser will protect you from energy price hikes as your geyser is the biggest consumer of electricity in your house
  • You can reduce your risk of penalties for exceeding consumption limits stipulated by government
  • You will only pay for your energy consumption
  • By installing or converting to a solar powered geyser you will be conserving the environment by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by 3.7 tons a year

Does installing or converting to a solar powered geyser help me reduce my carbon footprint?

Yes it does!

Carbon Footprint

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide and methane, all of which occur naturally on Earth. What is unnatural is the rate at which greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. The greenhouse gas effect, caused by an unnaturally high volume of emissions, is when greenhouse gases trap heat and light in the atmosphere and cause global temperatures to rise. When temperatures rise by too much (too much being a matter of one to two degrees), climates are irreparably damaged and plants and animals die out. To find out more, click here.

You can do your bit to temper the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment by reducing your carbon footprint. Your carbon footprint is your personal volume of CO2 emissions and it can be measured on a primary and secondary level. Your primary carbon footprint relates to direct CO2 emissions, such as driving your car or running electrical appliances every day.

By installing or converting to a solar powered geyser from hudu you too can reduce your carbon footprint and in a relatively simple and cost-effective manner make the world a little GREENER and start reversing the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment.

Can I convert my existing conventional electrical geyser to a solar powered geyser?

hudu can assist you in converting and retro-fitting your conventional electric geyser to a solar powered geyser as long as your existing geyser meets certain minimum technical requirements. Although there is a lot of talk out there about DIY conversion kits, this method is not advisable due to the nature of the equipment and labour involved. Contact us for any further information in this regard.

What is the Eskom rebate for converting to a solar powered geyser?

Eskom recently commended the solar industry for their efforts in improving the uptake of solar power in South Africa in the last three years. The Eskom solar programme increased its rebates in January 2010 dramatically, this was well received and the result of this increase was a massive ramp up in solar installations. The programme has done extremely well in the last year, going from only 2 525 claims in January 2010 to in excess of 64 000 claims to-date. Currently Eskom is receiving in excess of 13 500 claims per month!

Eskom will give rebates on solar water heater installations. Eskom are using an international best practice model for rebates.

From 29 April 2011 onwards the maximum rebate available will be the same as the current average rebate on the programme. Current rebate values lower than the new maximum value (in accordance with table below) will remain at their current level. For more information, please click here.
